Day 6: A Home for the Bicycles

Sunday, October 7, 2012

In our cleaning out of the guest room we were faced with a dilemma. Where should we house the bicycles? For most the solution would be simple, just put them outside. We found several great storage solutions for outside but our neighborhood tends to have things like bicycles and lawn mowers go missing if they are not properly secured (not that our neighborhood is dangerous, just a little rough around the edges sometimes).
So we started looking for indoor solutions. We just wanted something to get them off the ground and to look a little more organized. This was the longest part of our day yesterday. We found several solutions online but really did not want to pay the shipping on something that large. Our search began at Target and ended with Lowes. When we had gone to(and called about 5 stores) only to be told that they only sold car bike racks we started thinking of ways to build one ourselves. We really liked this idea we found on Pinterest.

However we have beach cruisers and they do not have a straight center bar. So we decided to modify it and this is what we came up with. First we bought a piece of shelving board with a rounded front. Next we attached the brackets (we only bought two to start but eventually added two more for stability) and hooks. Then we found the perfect place for it in the guest room and hung it. Now our bikes have a home and we are much happier having our guest room floor back.

What DIY storage solutions have you completed? Or just any DIY in general? Hope everyone is having a relaxing Sunday!
